Today we’re going to chat about something super important: intentionally taking a break, or as I like to call it, a Pause. In this world where everything seems so fricking urgent, it’s easy to forget that it’s ok to just stop for a moment. So let’s take a little time to explore this, shall we?
Reflect for a moment on a typical day. From the moment you wake up, it’s like you’re on this non-stop treadmill, right? Emails, calls, chores, rinse, repeat. It’s like we’re programmed to be in a constant state of doing. But here’s the thing: is all this hustle really necessary? What if we just gave ourselves permission to step off that treadmill and catch our breath? And how do we know it’s time to hit pause? It’s like this. You know when everything starts to feel like a huge ordeal? The phone rings and your heart jumps. An email pops up and you’re instantly stressed. That’s our body and mind screaming for a break. It’s about listening to those signals and saying, “Hey, it’s ok. I need a moment.”
Now, taking a pause doesn’t mean booking a flight to a remote island (though that does sound nice!) It’s about simple things. Like, when was the last time you just sat quietly for 5 minutes or took a walk with your phone on silent? Or how about taking the time to breathe deeply when you’re feeling stressed? These simple things can flip our inner switches from Freak Out Mode to Peace Mode.
Let’s focus on breathing for a second. I’m not talking about anything fancy, so relax. Just deep, slow breaths. You know, the kind that makes your belly rise and fall. It’s like you’re telling your body, “Chill, we’re ok!” And you can do it anywhere, whether you’re stuck in traffic, in a long line at the grocery store, or even in one of those endless Zoom meetings.
Movement is another way to find your calm. And I don’t mean hitting the gym hard, unless that's your thing, of course. It’s about gentle, mindful movements. Walking through the park while observing nature, gently stretching at your desk, or even dancing salsa in your kitchen. It’s all about reconnecting with your body and giving your mind a break from the noise.
Now this one might sound a bit out there, but bear with me. Cold exposure. Yeah, I mean like cold showers or splashing your face with cold water. It’s like a physical reset button. It shocks the system a bit, but in a good way, and tells your body, “Wake Up!”, but also, “Don’t Panic!”. It’s super refreshing, and trust me, you will get used to it.
Meditation is not just for Yogis or Monks. It’s for everyone, and it’s simpler than most people think. Just find a quiet spot, sit comfortably, and focus on your breath. Let your thoughts come and go, without judgment. It’s about giving your brain a little down time it can use to recharge. Think of it as a cat nap for your mind.
So, how do we effectively make all of this part of our daily grind? It’s about small, consistent steps. Maybe start with setting an alarm to remind yourself to do a 5-minute meditation in the morning or take a short walk after lunch. Or how about ending your day with a cold shower? It’s about experimenting and finding what works for you. Don’t feel pressured to make what works for someone else work for you. You’re crafting your own personal pause routine. The true power of this habit lies in realizing you have the power to slow down. It’s about enjoying life, not just rushing through it. When we pause, we actually end up experiencing, feeling more, and, honestly, enjoying more. It’s about being present in our own lives. I want you to set aside a few minutes today to think about where you can add a little pause into your day. Remember, it is more than ok to take some time for yourself. It’s essential. It’s like giving yourself a gift every single day, and who doesn’t like gifts, right?
