A Case of the Sunday Scaries

Updated: May 27, 2022

For many, Sunday is a day for peaceful relaxation. However, you may also notice that in the midst of enjoying this down time, you're experiencing restlessness, nausea, or other symptoms of anxiety. This phenomenon has been dubbed the Sunday Scaries, and don't worry! You're definitely not alone. Of course, if your work week or school week doesn't start on Monday, you may experience this on other days. Whether consciously or not, your brain is thinking ahead and preparing for the danger it considers imminent. There may be an actual, identifiable cause (like an unkind boss) or you may just feel a general uneasiness without a specific trigger.

There are a few things you can do to help relieve these symptoms. Sometimes just doing some self-reflection and understanding the cause of your emotion can help. Naming things creates a bit of control over them, and that may be enough. For others, getting a planner and having a clear schedule for the week is effective. Action also has an impact on anxiety, so you could try prepping your meals for the week so you have one less thing to worry about. On the other hand, maybe your body is telling you that a job or lifestyle change is in order or that you need to re-examine your priorities. Let me know in the comments if you have other techniques!

If you feel like anxiety is causing issues in your life, please do not hesitate to reach out to a therapist or other health professional. You are not alone, and there are resources available that can help.
